Consumers International's ongoing communications work in context - A, B and C
Consumers International has recently brought its global campaigns
related to access to knowledge (A2K) and information and
communications technologies (ICTs) under the new banner of
"Communications" (see
http://www.consumersinternational.org/our-work/communications).
This is much broader than the "Copyright" programme area previously
listed on our global website, and incorporates (amongst other
activities) each of the A, B and C themes featured on our relaunched
A2Knetwork.org microsite and recently presented at the Global
Congress: A for Access to Knowledge, B for Broadband, and C for
Consumer Rights & Representation.
To make it clearer how these themes tie together and which of our
activities they cover, I have prepared a simple diagram which you
may find attached. This may also help you to understand what are
the major activities that are coming up in the next 12 months.
The activities that we would most appreciate your involvement in at
the moment are:
- For those of you working on the campaign "Holding Broadband
Service Providers to Account", you should now be collecting
consumer survey responses (and/or interviews), and preparing
your own responses to our member survey. If you run into
problems, I and your allotted regional coordinator are available
to help you. - For everyone, please take a few minutes to complete the survey
that I wrote to you about yesterday, at
http://survey.idgovmap.org/index.php?sid=48277. Those who
complete the survey may be eligible, later, to receive funding
from CI to attend meetings of international and regional bodies
dealing with important information society issues. - If you have any last comments on our proposed A2K amendments
to the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection, please
make them before 31 August at http://A2Knetwork.org/guidelines.
We also soon expect to announce some new opportunities for
members to engage in funded research on the proposed amendments,
with priority to those who participated earlier. - Please plan ahead to attend our next global meeting in
February 2012. This will be a combined meeting on access to
knowledge, broadband advocacy, and capacity building for
representing consumers on information society issues. The exact
date and agenda will be posted here when available.
I hope that this has been helpful, but please don't hesitate to
contact me if you have any remaining questions about what we are
doing and how you can get involved.
