The Malaysian government has set an example for the Asia-Pacific region in its support for free and open source softwareⁱ (FOSSⁱ). In 2004 it launched a master plan for rolling out FOSS throughout the public sector. That plan is now in its second phase of "accelerated adoption", which is intended to make the use of FOSS within government more pervasive. The overall aims of the programme are:

On 21-22 April, Kuala Lumpur hosted a gathering of 36 Consumers International members and partners for its first global meeting on Access to Knowledge. The meeting included the launches of CIⁱ's 2010 IP Watchlist, which has since gained much media interest, and our runaway hit short film When Copyright Goes Bad, which has since accumulated almost 50 thousand page views in English and Spanish.

The digitization of Brazilian Cultural Collections has become a high priority issue, asking for an analysis about the limits imposed by the current Copyright Law, the opportunities created by new technologies, the existing standards, as well as the strategies to create an effective network between organizations and existing projects.

Consumers International and the African Copyright and A2Kⁱ Project (ACA2K) this week held a successful workshop looking at the Global State of Copyright and Access to Knowledge at the 2009 meeting of the multi-stakeholder United Nations Internet Governance Forum in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt. The session was moderated by Dr Bassem Awad from ACA2K, who is also Chief Judge at the Egyptian Ministry of Justice.

Consumers International, with the support of UFC-Que Choisir and La Quadrature du Net, is holding a Business Roundtable on the Consumer Interest in IPRs on the afternoon of 22 October (just before the TACDⁱ's second Paris Accord meeting), to bring together representatives of the entertainment, publishing, information technology and communications industries to discuss and debate the role that consumers' interests play in their decision-making
