I want it now! Creators addressing consumers' needs in the digital age: 30 May 2012, Brussels
Please
‘Save the Date’ on 30th of May, 2012 for a special event:
I
want it now!
Creators
addressing consumers’ needs in the digital age
Time:
13:45 - 17:15
Location:
Library of the European Parliament, Brussels
Hosted by
Marietje Schaake MEP, and organised by Consumers International (CI), the
European Consumers’ Organisation (BEUC), and Copyright
for Creativity (c4c).
Join
us for an interactive session on the copyright challenges of the
21st century from the point of view of consumers. Like previous
c4c events, we will depart from the conventional to help
everyone ‘think outside the box’:
-
No
copyright expertise is required: this will be a ‘jargon-free’,
non-legalistic
discussion of the practical, rather than a dry debate about
the law;
-
50% of the time will be dedicated to audience interactions;
-
Consumers,
creators and rightsholders will explore three provocative
topics via an Oxford Union-style debate of the ‘pro’ and
‘con’ side of each topic - with audience participation;
-
Participants
include
internationally esteemed experts and policymakers and
creators themselves, including a multi-platinum-selling
featured performer, composer, and record producer Martyn
Ware.
In
addition to that, panelists and participants from the audience
will explore specific, practical, short-term solutions that
would allow consumers to use copyrighted material in ways which
are generally tolerated by rights-holders - such as recording a
TV show for later viewing - but whose lawfulness varies across
Europe, while arguments about a permanent legal solution
proceed.
Immediately
prior to the event, we will have a relaxed lunch from 12:45 to
13:45.
Join
us in the morning for more:
From
9:30 until 12:45, c4c, in cooperation with the European and
international memory institutions, are hosting “Index
or footnote? How to ensure that libraries power the information
society”.
This event, which counts on the participation of a number
international experts and policymakers, promises to be very
interesting as it provides a close look at libraries’ needs
to continue to be able to provide access to and preserve our
cultural heritage and helps attendees understand the link
between European solutions and international action in Geneva.
Read
more about both events in the attachment. You are welcome to
attend either or both and all attendees are welcome for lunch.
